OHS Library Mission Statement:

The Oceanside School District is located in a suburban community in Nassau County, on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. Its presence on the web can be found at http://oceansideschools.org/.

The Oceanside High School Library provides the place and the resources for students to accomplish curriculum and independent educational and personal goals too.

The mastery of student skills through interdisciplinary approaches, active learning and cooperation between classroom teachers and librarians (Library Media Specialists) is the ultimate goal of the research component of the program.

Students are encouraged to become lifelong library users: to acquire the skills necessary to access information for power and understanding; to become competent users of technology as keys to information; to develop information literacy skills that will last them a lifetime.

Teachers and Library Media Specialists (librarians) work together to plan lessons that enable the students to accomplish and assimilate curriculum goals using the research process. Skills may be taught in the classroom or Library Media Center and reinforced, expanded upon, or reviewed in the Library Media Center for sequential learning.

The foundation of libraries today, including the OHS Library, can still be found in the print collections that support the curriculum. Forecasters predicted that the means of accessing many reference sources would be done in electronic format. We planned for this and over the years have enhanced the information available in our audiovisual  and  print collections with a vast array of online  databases and selected websites that can be accessed not only from within the school but from home as well through the OHS Library Resources webpage.  This has proven very beneficial for students enabling them to continue research started in the Library during the day or to begin their projects at home.
